A Memorable Experience

One of the highlights of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha's cultural festival was a Bharatnatyam performance by a leading dancer in India, Leela Samson. Her grace, her agility, her humility and her poise all combined, produced an electrifying effect on the audience. Her aesthetic dress sense and her cheerful countenance endeared herself further.

Leela SamsonLeela commenced with a Shiva stuthi followed by a crisp Alarippu in Misram. Though more dancers today have re-introduced the Alarippu in their repertoires, watching a senior dancer perform it was a lesson to young aspirants. Following this, was a varnam by the Tanjore Quartet. 'Sami Ni Ve' in Kalyani ragam, was a shringara - bhakthi combination, where the nayika professes her love and devotion to the nayaka who is referred to as 'Sri padmanabha Dasudow' she beseeches him not to let her down and come to her soon. She indicates her devotion to him in "Nine Na Praana naadulu' The abhinaya was calm, unhurried and had great depth. The nritta was a treat to watch. The lines were clear and firm, The finishing was excellent. If anything, the singing of O.S.Arun, though very good on its own, tended to overwhelm the dance presentation.

'Rase Hari Milan Vilita vilasam' an ashtapadi by Jayadeva had Radha in a disturbed frame of mind imagining her beloved Krishna with some other woman. Leela's portrayal spoke of love, confusion and envy. A javali maayaladi in Todi was next. An incensed nayaka says, 'Did any of you (sakhis) cast a spell on my beloved? We were both so happy together. What has happened now to separate us? You, who saw our initimate moments, did you do it in envy?.

Leela performed a Surdas bhajan 'Akhiyan Hart Darshan' which was followed by a tillana composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman in Revathi ragam.

Excellent nattuvangam support came from Shobhana Swamy. Other orchestra members were Vijayaraghavan on the mridangam, T.K. Padmanabhan on the violin, and Raghuraman on the flute.
