Vibrant Danseuse

Shobana, formerly a disciple of Smt. Chitra Visweswaran is one of the younger generation of dancers who have made a name for themselves. She attracts and hold the attention of the audience with her vibrant stage presence. Her confidence combined with her accurate sense of timing create a dramatic effect sometimes mistaken for spontaneity.

'Sarasoodv Neevai' a varnam in Vachaspati ragam was chosen by Shobana for delineation. The shringara varnam portrayed the nayika in love with Lord Brihadeeshwara. She is lost in thought of him and her longing to see him and be with him grows intense. In the line Karuna.... nayana she describes the face and form of her beloved. Her jathis were long and took her across the stage many times over. Her stamina was remarkable. And her choreography innovative. The first jathi repeated 'thathinginathom' several times with different adavus every time.

A solo dance drama composed by saint Thyagaraja and choreographed by Padmini Ravi was presented by Shobana. It featured Krishna and the gopis on a boat. Krishna creates an illusory storm to reveal himself and destroy their ego. The dancer was comfortable miming Koshna and the gopis. She could avoid doing the gopi alankara' scene with sollukattus, as it detracts from the mood portrayed.

The orchestra was of a high standard. Vocalist savitri and Girja Ramaswamy were well supported by Ganesh on the Mridangam, V.Sivaganesh on the violin and Srinivasan on the flute. M. Balachandran's nattuvangam was strong and clear.
