Priya Mohan - Befitting example of Lasya Beauty without substance is nothing… Beauty with substance but without soul is next to nothing…Beauty with substance and soul is everything…A dancer requires these attributes to be taken seriously. A young dancer, Priya Mohan almost has it all. A disciple of Shantha Dhananjayan and V.P.Dhananjayan, Priya accredited herself with her focussed approach and her elegant exposition. Her recital was for the Yuva Utsav festival, organized by Bharat Kalachar, Chennai.
Kanda Alarippu, and a padam in Shanmugapriya ragam, 'Eeru mayileri' preceded the varnam. The Tanjore Quartet composition in Husseini ragam, Adi talam, 'Eeye mayaladira' gave enough scope to Priya to showcase her talent. She was word perfect in her nritta, though her 'araimandi' left much to be desired. The nayika is in love with Vishnu. She extols his virtues, and begs him to remember the love that existed between them earlier. The varnam was a racy item without pause. The choreography was, needless to say, excellent, and Priya's presentation, flawless. Shantha Dhananjayan's nattuvangam was a perfect combination of firmness and control, and her voice modulation, unbelievable. It was pure listening pleasure. Purandaradasa's padam in Thillang, 'Brindavanadolu' was a light-hearted piece with Krishna and his gopis in Brindavan, carousing together. 'Sivakama sundari' in Mukhari ragam, Adi talam, composed by Papanasam Sivan was in praise of Devi. Priya's 'dukham' in her portrayal of devotees in distress, was very real and moving. The encouraging orchestra consisted of: Shantha Dhananjayan, nattuvangam, Jyothismathi Shreejith, vocal, S.S.R.Krishnan, mridangam, Kalaiarasan, violin, and Sashidharan, flute. The vocalist was very good, but seemed unsure at times. Priya finished with a thillana in Kunthalavarali ragam, Adi talam, a composition of Dr.Balamuralikrishna. This pretty, charming girl can go places with continued perseverance. |
