Mastery of the ArtTotal dedication and involvement combined with a high level of artistic ability marked Priyadarshini Govind's dance performance in Sri.Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. Endowed with expressive eyes and a mobile face, every nuance and gesture carried a wealth of meaning with it.
"Sumasayakka Vidhura" a composition of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal in Karnataka Kapi was the varnam she chose. The sakthi entreats Lord Padmanabha to go to her friend. She is lost without you, don't betray her, she says. The sancharis showing the nayika dreaming she is with her beloved, exchanging garlands applying sandal wood paste etc. was very convincing, and so was the realization that, all that was only a dream. A proud and defiant nayika is ready to take on the world. If people want to gossip about me and my relationship with him, let them, she says in, 'Yaar Kakilum bhayama', a padam in Begada. Jayadeva's ashtapadi, 'Sakhiye keshi mathanam udaram' was very sensitively portrayed. Radha described her first encounter with Krishna who helps her overcome her shyness and her inhibitions. The switches of character portrayal between Radha and Krishna were very quick and at the same time flowing without cutting the thread of the narration. Priya speaks so well with her eyes, so the minimal hand gestures added to the impact of this ashtapadi. The dancer slipped into the role of a young girl (a mugdha nayika) who pleads with Krishna that she is too young to be seduced by him. Not an easy task. Priyadarshini was able to carry it off without any reservations. The Javali in sainvi 'Itu Sahasamulu' was composed by Swati Thirunal. Priyadarshini's adhinaya is well known and appreciated. What adds to her expressive face are the uncluttered hand gestures, and the suitable stances she employs while emoting. The concluding piece was a complicated tillana in Padama Panchamum Talam (19 aksharas). The composition in Behaq was by Reggie George. It kept the audience and the orchestra counting. Priyadarshini with her keen lines and lively nritta did justice to the demanding piece. Reggi George and Lakshman as vocalist and nattuvanar conducted the programme competently. Nellai D. Kannan on the Mridangam, and Sivaganesh on the violin gave them good support. |
