Artistry of a high order Priyadarshini is an artist with a deep sense of involvement. She performed at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, during their Annual Festival Of Music and Dance. She commenced with a Pushpanjali in Gambhiranattai ragam, Adi talam. This was followed by a slokha on Ganapathi.
Priyadarshini chose the Husseini Swarajathi 'Ye Mayaladithe', author, anonymous. One of the oldest compositions of its kind, the Swarajathi has a love-lorn nayika waiting to be reunited with her Lord again. 'Why are you like this? Have you forgotten your love for me? Or has some other woman poisoned your mind against me?' Her sancharis were very sensitively portrayed. She depicted the Dasaavtaar, to convey the many ways in which the Lord appeared to help his devotees. In the charanam 'Chiruthenatti mudalu ninne dhalachitivira', she showed the progress of the nayika's friendship with the nayaka. First they play together as children, then they become aware of each other as adolescents, and finally fall in love as young adults. The dancer's footwork was very good. Nellai D. Kannan, on the mridangam was an asset to the programme. 'Kuru Yedu Nandana', the last ashtapadi of Jayadeva's Geetha Govinda followed. Essentially a piece of love poetry, it requires courage and confidence to attempt this on stage. Radha wakes up in Krishna's arms after a night of passion. Satiated and confident, she playfully orders Krishna to redo what he had undone. She asks him to cool the bruises on her breasts, to reapply the kohl in her eyes, to bind her hair , to put back her anklets. For the most part, Priyadarshini was sitting on the stage while emoting. Her treatment was so subtle, communicating with just her eyes and her hands. The ashtapadi rose from being a piece of erotic poetry to something that was meant on a higher plane of understanding. Artistry can have no better meaning. The effect would have been even greater had the vocalist, Reji George, been more involved. Priyadarshini's costume merited attention too. Designed by V.V.Ramani, it was a regular dance costume made with beige and red Ikkat silk, the fan being of gold tissue. Set off with red jewellery, it was understated and tasteful. The dancer concluded with a thillana in Yamankalyani ragam, Adi talam, a composition of the vocalist himself. Priyadarshini has achieved a good balance of geometry and grace in her nritta. A.Lakshman wielded the cymbals and Nagarajan played the violin for the evening's recital. |
