Alpha To Omega Learning Centre is a centre for children with specific learning difficulties. They organised a fund raiser called the 'Dance Millenia'. The children presented dances to popular pop music numbers. They were trained by the dancers of The Academy Of Modern Danse. Guest performers were Anita Ratnam's Arangham Dance Theatre, and The Academy of Modern Danse.
The primary and junior school performed as butterflies, a dance of spring. With wings stuck on their backs, and with arms flapping, they made an endearing picture. Jackson Mania was next. A live version of a mix of popular songs of Michael Jackson were used. It was strange to see so many Jackson-look alikes on stage! Well choreographed and more importantly, very well executed. The children seemed to be enjoying themselves, comfortable with their movements and quite proud of their accomplishments. It was easy to forget that these were children with specific learning difficulties. A couple of old songs followed: 'I'm Just A Baby In The Business Of Love', where the children were dressed in black and white; and rock and roll, with 'Back To School Again' from Grease II.
'Talking Drums' was presented by the Arangham Dance Troupe. A tribute to the heartbeat of humanity they claimed. Conceived and choreographed by Anita Ratnam, the dancers explore the movements beyond classical dance and it's established symmetry. Purely rhythmic, the syllables of Bharatanatyam, along with percussion instruments were used, individually or together. The dancers exhibited a high caliber of flexibility, and timing. The movements were a mixture of classical dance and innovations of martial art, like the kalaripayattu. There were some gravity defying movements too, in between. The formations made by the dancers deserve special mention. The costumes were stark; the girls were totally in black with a minimum of ornamentation, and the boys in beige or black. It was an interesting experiment in movement, both for the dancers, and the choreographer, and a welcome change for the audience from the regular classical styles.
The Academy of Modern Danse presented some of their students and staff in a few dances numbers. The choreographers- Kokila, Gautam, Mugilan, and Krishna, along with some of their students presented the Jazz, and the Latin American Salsa. A dance to Paula Abdul's 'My Love Is For Real' called Trans Inspiration deserves special mention. 'Mixed Bag' had the dancers doing modern, classical, and folk dance steps side by side. The show concluded with all the participants on stage moving in their own respective styles, to an adaptation of 'My Heart Goes On' from the Titanic. An enjoyable evening much enhanced by the sincere efforts of the children and their teachers.
