Nartana Sangama - Maestros in Unison

Dancer and Guru , Sudharani Raghupathy, celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of her dance school, Shree Bharatalaya. It was a two day festival of dance. The highlight of the first evening was the release of "Lagu Bharatam" Vol II (a handbook of Bharatanatyam). It was followed by a Bharatanatyam recital by Prof. Chandrashekar and Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshman.

The following day, Guru Indira Rajan and her students presented a verse on Shree Bharatalaya in Abhogi ragam. This was followed by a Thyagaraja keerthana in Abheri. They concluded with a thillana by Lalgudi Jayaraman in Madhuvanti ragam. A pleasant surprise was the introduction of the nadaswaram and the tavil into the orchestra.

"Deepanjali" was presented by the students of Shree Bharatalaya and Preetha Ratnam. It was a crisp number marked by a good tempo and by good footwork. In this item, a beautiful ragamalika thillana by Madurai N.Krishnan was further enhanced with a "pinnal kolattam".

Sonal Mansingh, Sudharani and Anita RatnamThe "piece de resistance" of the evening was "Nartana Sangama" a coming together of three dance styles and three artists of repute. Sonal Mansingh performed Odissi, Sudharani, Bharatanatyam and Anita Ratnam, Mohiniattam. "Jhalan Jhalita" in ragamalika from the Balarama Bharatham by Karthika Thirunal, was the opening number. Sonal picked out a couple of verses from Oriya poetry depicting the glory of the nayika's tresses. Also included was an ashtapadi where Krishna adorns the nayika's hair with flowers : keshopacharam. Sringara being the sthayi bhava, the alankaram was also distinctly depicted. Her mastery of the art was evident in her simple and subtle abhinaya.

Sudharani demonstrated her prowess in the Kapi javali "Saku Ninna Sneham" with the depiction of the khandita nayika. Her grace and poise is predominant in both her nritta and abhinaya. Anita Ratnam presented a navarasa slokam in ragamalika that highlighted her emotive abilities.

Both the orchestras were par excellence. The Oriyan musicians were : Bankim Sethi, vocal, Subrato Dey, sitar and Chandrashekar Mahopatra, tabla. The Carnatic musicians were : Nandini Anand, voal, Aruna Subbiah , nattuvangam, Anirudda, mridangam, Sashidar, flute and Vijayaraghavan, violin. The yedakkai for the Mohiniattam was provided by Padmanabha Das.

"Tarijam", a pallavi in Sankarabharanam was performed by the three dancers, alternating their nritta pieces. The odissi style seemed to be the most demanding and Sonal was in full control of all the intricacies involved. They concluded with a thillana in Sankarabharanam, this time in the Carnatic style, a composition of Madurai N.Krishnan. The programme was certainly a treat for all the dance lovers in Chennai.
