An IDA ExtravaganzaThe International Dance Alliance, Madras Chapter, organizes a two-day festival of dance every year. The theme this year was "Buds and Blossoms", meaning the dancers of today and tomorrow. The first day had items presented by disciples of Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, of the Narasimhacharis, of Revathi Ramachandran, of Madhuvanthi Arun and of Vidya Bhavani Suresh. Ballet was presented by the Galina Ulanova School of Ballet, Chennai. Special mention must be made of a dance item presented by Nataraj Nrithyashale, a rural troupe from Hampi, Karnataka. It was a colourful pageant of rhythm and music.
Bharati Shivaji, the renowned Mohiniatam dancer and her troupe performed an extract from the 16th century work, "Chandrotsavam". Chandrika, the nayika is condemned by her husband Chandra to live as a mortal for one hundred years. While on earth, one day, she is reminded of her identity in her dreams. She propitiates the Moon God and is accepted by her husband. Bharati as Chandrika gave an involved performance. The reconciliation scene was extraordinarily touching. The elaborate rituals were also well presented. The festival ended on an electrifying note with a tillana in Kapi ragam performed by today's crop of good dancers. Composed by Jyothismati and choreographed by Shrijith Krishna, the other dancers were Revathi Ramachandran, Priya Murle, Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, Sailaja, Uma Muralikrishna and Rajesh Balakrishna. A fitting finale to a good effort once again by IDA, Chennai and its founder-member, Ms Leela Sekhar. |
