Srekala Bharat-An Experienced Performer An experienced and mature dancer, Srekala Bharat, gave a Bharatanatyam recital at the Mylapore Fine Arts. The programme was in memory of late Sri M. Venkatakrishnan, founder and president, Sankarabarnam Trust and Past-President, Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha.
Srekala commenced with a Pushpanjali followed by a Swati Tirunal krithi 'Deva Deva Jagadeeswaru' in Ragam Purikalyani. 'Mayan Vara Kanene', a varnam on Ranganathaswamy was compiled by Sri T. S. Parthasarthy from the Thiruppavai and from the Nachiar Thirumuzhi. It was tuned by the violinist, Sri Sivaganesh in Malayamarudam ragam and set to Adi talam. Dressed as Andal, the dancer yearns to see Krishna. She describes his compassion while going to the rescue of Draupadi. The game of dice between Yudhishtira and Duryodhana was enacted with restraint and involvement. Her expressive face did most of the emoting. Her abhinaya was simple and her gestures uncomplicated. Her jathis were crisp, but tired Srekala during the course of the varnam. A lilting javali in Paras, 'Cheli Nenetlu' , was next. The nayika pines for her Lord, upset at his treachery. Srekala was at home doing this piece. She concluded with a thillana by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar in ragam, Poornachandrika and talam, Adi. She was graceful in her adavus and her lines were adequate though she looked tired in between. Her postures was admirable. Smt. Chitrambari did very well as a vocalist. She was well supported by Sri Sivaganesh on the violin. Nattuvangam was adequately handled by Smt. Subhasri and on the mridangam was Sri Dhananjayan. |
