An Invigorating Experience with Mavin Khoo
Narada Gana Sabha presented Mavin Khoo in a Bharatanatyam recital in Chennai. Mavin is from Malaysia and is a disciple of Ramili Ibrahim and Adyar K. Lakshmanan.
Right from the first item, the dancer conveyed his amazing mastery of the dance form. In 'Mooshika Vahana', a sloka on Ganapathi, Mavin's leg movements imitating the elephant were controlled and graceful. 'Ananda Nartana Ganapathi' in ragam Nattai by Uthukadu Venkatasubbayar had more of the dancing form of Ganapathi, with crisp and efficient movements.
Mavin chose the Tanjore Quartet varnam 'Sami Nee Ramanave' in Khamas ragam. An unusual choice for a male dancer, this being a 'sringara' varnam. But the maturity of the dancer stood him in good stead. The lovelorn nayika urges her sakhi to bring her Lord to her.In the line, 'Bhumilo Sri Tanjapuri Brihadeeswaruni...,' she describes the greatness of the nayaka. Mavin's illustration of the procession of the Lord with the musicians and the dancers was graphic. The jathis were fast paced and demanding. This brought out the best in Mavin. His technique is his strong point and he would do well to showcase it better with slower paced adavus. His araimandi also deserves mention here. Papanasam Shivan's Varali padam 'Kavava' did not give the dancer any scope to demonstrate his emotive prowess. Mavin concluded with a tillana by Dr. Balamurali Krishna in ragam Kadanakuduhalam. His stamina and enthusiasm were commendable. Mavin has crossed many barriers including the language and the cultural barriers to get to where he is today. This dedication to the art speaks for itself. The orchestral support for the evening were provided by Ramesh Chadaga as Vocalist, Niveen Harsha as nattuvanar, Chandrasekhar as percussionist, Vinod Kumar as Violinist, and Lakshminarayanan for the sruthi. |
