Mahaa BhaaratamCondensing such an epic as the Mahabharata is not atask accomplished easily. Attempted by stalwarts like Smt. Shantha Dhananjayan and Sri V.P. Dhananjayan with a troupe of over 60 dancers was ashow with alot of promise. Only important episodes were enacted, the rest all explained by the Narrator, Dr. Raghuraman. This production was originally choreographed as a joint presentation with the French theatre group, Champ-Fleuri of Reunion Island and Association Vani.In India, it was reconstruced with 'Bharatakalanjali' artistes. On Veda Vyasa's request, Ganesha agrees to write the story of Mahabharata, provided the tale is uninterupted until it's completion. The story of a young hunter boy, Ekalavya, whose thumb Dronacharya asks for as guru-dakshina was enacted. The killing of the demon Bhakasura provided some lighter moments. Dhananjayan as Bheema teases the demon by offering him food and then eating it himself. Incensed, the demon comes to fight with Bheema, and is killed. Draupadi's swayamvaram is dealt with very briefly. One day, Duryodhana and His brother come to visit the Pandava palace in Indraprastha. Mistaking the shiny floor to be a pond, Duryodhana jumps in to swim. Draupadi mocks at him. Duryodhana is infuriated and vows revenge. Subsequently, Yudhishtira is drawn into a game of dice with Duryodhana and his uncle, Shakuni. Draupadi is dragged into court after Yudhishtira loses all his wealth, kingdom, and family. M.B. Vijayalakshmi was convincing as Draupadi in her humiliation and in her anger. Her vow not to tie her hair untill it has been washed with the blood of Dussasana was also dramatic. After their years in exile and in disguise, the Pandavas send Krishna as their messenger to the Kauravas. Duryodhana is antagonistic and dismisses him. Thus Krishna declares war on the Kauravas. S. Suresh deserves mention for his portrayal of Duryodhana with his arrogance and his hatred for his cousins. Suryanarayana Murthy as Krishna gives a mature performance. When Arjuna is distraught on the battlefield, Krishna gives him the wisdom to carry on his duty regardless of the consequences. The Geetopadesam scene with the portrayal of the Vishwaroopam was very moving. The dancing girls maintained a high level of technique and timing throughout the programme. The war scene in particular. There were long rows of dancers moving repetitively to a drumbeat. An adaptation of a regular soldier's march perhaps. Dussasana's and Duryodhana's deaths were illustrated in gory detail. Are these details relevant to the story? Dussasana's is ofcourse. Bheema ripping open Dussasana's chest to take his blood to Draupadi is essential to the plot, but makes for very unpleasant viewing. Krishna helps Bheema overcome his disillusion after the war. The 'pattabhishekam' is performed. The choreography with the dancing girls for the concluding tillana was very crisp, lively, and well executed. The lyrics, music composition and vocal support was by Kumbakonam A.Gajendran and N.Sasidharan. Concept and choreography was by V.P. Dhananjayan. Nattuvangam was by Shanta Dhananjayan. Ramesh Babu on the mridangam, Kalaiarasan on the violin, R.Kannan on the veena and Sunilkumar on the flute, all contributed to the production. |
