Sing Along '99

A show with a difference! Adults actually reciting nursery rhymes and clowning around with children! Non-stop fun and action marked the programme. Starting off with a chorus line, 'Boomda.....boomda.....' and ending with a solemn 'Twinkle, twinkle little star,' Sing Along kept the children and their escorts thoroughly entertained.

Sing Along '99

Following 'Boomda.....' was 'ABCD'- the alphabet song. Singing backwards was a challenge and the little ones had a good time trying to keep up. Songs and nursery rhymes were in English, Hindi, Tamil and even in French.

'Priya's Day,' narrated by Jeeva in Tamil, was the story of a day in the life of a simple, village girl, Priya. The story was illustrated with the help of paper shapes made on the spot by the storyteller. 'Gopi Chander' in Hindi was also well received. '.....up mein pani, down mein pani, front mein pani, back mein pani, bolo kitna pani....' went the rhyme. 'Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed,' 'Move Over' and 'You Put Your Right Hand In....' were the action songs in English that were much appreciated.

The educational songs like 'Father Abraham' and 'Green Grass Grows All Around and Around,' were interesting. The highlight of the evening was the 'Menu Card' song. Certain food items intoned in a special way were made to sound like a train. Phrases like 'coffee,' 'fish and chips,' 'cheese and biscuits,' 'soup' repeated over and over again gave the impression of a speeding train. The children were on their feet, forming a line and chugging away through the auditorium.

Sing Along '99Led by Krishna Iyer, also the founder and trustee of Reach Out, the other performers were Indira Rangarajan, Jeeva Raghunath, Raghuram Avula, Freddy Kolkaran and Vidyuth Sreenivasan. They were well co-ordinated as a team and endearing in their performances.

Reach Out, the organizaion behind the show, helps emotionally traumatized children from all walks of life. Sing Along is an annual fund-raising event put up by them.

The tickets said, 'Adults allowed only if accompanied by children.' Very original! But who enjoyed the show more - the children or their 'adult' chaperons?!!
