Unhurried and Calm Dance StyleMeenakshi Chittaranjan, a senior artiste of the Pandanallur dance style, performed at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. Her traditional and unhurried style was soothing. Also remarkable, in this day and age, when dancers resort to speed and dramatisation to hold the audiences attention. Her dance was calm, unobtrusive and flowed smoothly. Meenakshi Nattuvanar, Pandanallur Pandian and Musician Kutralam Nagarajan were probably the pick of the season.
Kshetrayya's padam in Sahana 'Joodare' had an obhisarika nayika being made fun by her sakhis. She comes from a good family and is married into another good family, yet she is brazenly having an affair with Krishna. She is so besotted with him that neither the state of her dress nor the gossip about her matters to her. The portrayals of the sakhis and the nayika were very maturely done with the role switching clear and deft. Kavi Kunjala Bharathis'Innimel avarukkum ennakkum Oru podum inangadu' in Bhairavi ragam was next. 'Katheetha Samayae' in Ragamalika, an ashtapadi by Jayadeva followed the padam. Meenakshi deplicted a sorrowful love lorn nayika who prefers to die rather than bear the pain of separation from krishna. The finale was a tillana in Dhanasri by Maharaja Swati Thirunal Meenakshi was able to keep up a good tempo even at the end of her recital. The surprise was the inclusion of some kathak steps in the tillana. Excellent support from the wings was provided by Shakthivel on the mridangam, Shikamani on the violin, and Srinivasan on the flute. |
