Dr. Lakshmi Sriram

Dr. Lakshmi SriramTrained under some of the finest teachers in both the Carnatic and Hindustani music forms, Dr. Lakshmi Sriram has made waves in both fields.

She began her training in Hindustani music in Mumbai with Smt. Madhubala Chawla (Jhaveri) under whose guidance she passed the Visharad examination of the Akhil Bharatitya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, securing a first class. Later, under the Late Pt. Vasantrao Kulkarni one of the most venerated of teachers, she received advanced training as a scholar of the Guru Shishya Parampara scheme of the Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre at Mumbai. After this she also received advanced training in Khayal music.

Lakshmi's Gayaki is based mainly on the Gwalior Gharana, but with the encouragement from her gurus, as well as by drawing from her considerable listening experience, she has struck her own approach to Khayal singing. Her long and intensive training in Carnatic music has also contributed in her crafting her own style.

Some of Lakshmi's notable performances include :

  • Several under the aegis of various music organisations at Mumbai and Pune, as well as some of the most prestigious sabhas at Madras.
  • She has performed at many music functions and festivals, such as the Sangeet Samrat Alladiya Khan Samaroh in 1995, the Amrut Mahotsav of Pt. Vasantrao Kulkarni in '92 and at the Young Artist's Festival in '88 of the India Music group.
Apart from singing, Lakshmi is also a trained Bharatanatyam dnacer and dance critic. A gold medalist from the University of Mumbai, Lakshmi has done her Ph.D in philosophy.
