Inaugral concert for the Music Education Trust

T.V.Gopalakrishnan literally forced me to attend his vocal concert on Christmas day from the Music Education Trust which he inaugurated. TVG was my schoolmate in Ernakulam. The TVG music fest was held at the Asthika Samajam, Alwarpet.

In the two hour concert, his brief introduction before every song was very educative. A similar effort from all the musicians would help even the novice to understand carnatic classical music. The curtain raiser was Giriraja Suta in Raga Bangla. The next piece was a Dikshitar kriti in Raga Chaya Natai. Then came the Gowlipanthu Shyama Shastri Kriti in Tamil. TVG said that Shyama Shastri has composed only 15 kritis in Tamil. Also Gowlipanthu which is borrowed from the Hindustani stream is no longer used by them.

The Thyagaraja Kriti Meru Samanamae in Mayamalavagowla was the next piece. Mrithu Bhashana Nata Vibishana, another Thyagaraja piece which is not found in all the books on Thyagaraja Kritis was taken up next. This was in the raga Maruva Dhanyasi, a Nata Bhairavi Janyam?

The main raga was Kambodhi in which he rendered a Tamil kriti by Ananda Padmanabhan. In the Anu Pallavi , where the Sahitya ended, he rendered Thanam which was an intelligent move which jelled very well. He then continued with Kallpana swaras and ended the piece. He concluded the concert with a Purandara Dasa Devar Nama.

The accompanying artistes- two violinists , the gentleman on the mridangam and the female who rendered vocal support were all TVG's disciples.

During the inaugural function at Music Education Trust (Delhi), he announced that he will not hold any festival under the AIMA in future as he is not able to sustain such an effort in the Chennai rat race.
