Indian painting can be traced to 200 BC. A period when artists were producing work of lyrical beauty, naturalism and grace, decorating walls of palaces and temples with scenes from religious teachings. Later, under the Mughals, miniature painting flourished - with courtly scenes being the most popular subject.

At the same time, other schools of painting were developing, such as the Rajasthani school, which used brighter colours and probably therefore had a wider appeal. With the arrival of the British, traditional forms of painting gave way to more western subjects and styles. Early this century saw a revival of interest in traditional and folk art - which has resulted in work that is contemporary yet very Indian in essence.

Acrylic on paperRohini Sinha
Rohini's work springs from nature - and has evolved from her childhood experiences of growing up in Northern India. The deep browns, red and ochre of the earth, the nebulous greys of the clouds, the greens of the trees, and bright yellows of the vast mustard fields get abstracted and take shape in her paintings. As do the textures, which happen naturally - like spontaneous brush strokes - and become an integrated part of the picture.

Acrylic on paperLakshmi Srinath
An artist with a meticulous touch that is reflected in her choice of subjects, the dexterity of palette knife strokes, the harmony of hues - each one of her works is bold and earthy. Ochre, brown, grey and white are blended with sudden unexpected splashes of vibrant colour, creating a dramatic effect.
Acrylic on paperB. Swapna Reddy
Swapna's creativity is best expressed by her harmonious pictorial compositions. She enjoys the exploitation of bright hues on her palette. Still life or landscapes, her paintings are a riot of colour in bold impastos - her deft handling of colours, spontaneously layering them with the palette knife, creates a strikingly harmonious effect.
