Srekala Bharath Srekala Bharath was introduced to classical dance at the age of seven and made a mark in Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of her guru Kalaimamaani Smt. K.J.Sarasa of Chennai. Her guru was one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Vazhvoor Ramaiah Pillai and it was natural that Srekala Bharath imbibed the Vazhvoor style of dance. After her arangetram in '72, Srekala practised intensely to acquire proficiency on a strong foundation. Known for her skillful footwork and imaginative recitals, her career has been a march from one successful performance to another and the kudos she continues to receive bear testimony to her skill and devotion. Srekala is a busy dancer and has performed at major festivals in India and abroad. To mention a few : The Puri Festival Mamallapuram Dance Festival Hampi and Bijapur festivals Kalidas Samaroh festival at Ujjain International Snow Festival, Sapporo, Japan India Shows at HongKong, Korea and Philippines In recognition of her contribution to Bharatanatyam, Srekala has received several awards, such as the title of "Nadanamamani" from Karthik Fine Arts and that of "Shiva Sakthi Natya Chintamani from the Omkar Ashram of Pondicherry. She was araded the Bharatha Ratnam by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Colombo and the title of "Kalaimamani" by the Government of Tamil Nadu - the highest civilian award to a performing artiste. A dedicated dancer who dances for the sake of art, Srekala has contributed significantly in promoting the art to contemporary relevance - not just through her own performances, but also by exploring new avenues of choreography. The dance ballet produced by her based on the nine types of devotion in dance is testimony to her devotion and passion for Bharatanatyam.
