Nalini Prakash

Nalini has been learning Bharatanatyam from Padmashree Dr. Sudharani Raghupathy, at Shree Bharatalaya.

Ever since she had her arangetram at the age of 10, she has been performing at some of the most important centres in the country. Apart from her performances at all the reputed sabhas, she has also danced at the Museum Theatre for Max Muller Bhavan, as a tribute to the International Year of the Child.

Nalini took part in the popular television series "Bharatanjali" conducted by her guru Sudharani Raghupathy. Some of her other performances include that at the Natyanjali Festival at Chidambaram, at the Murugan Temple in Porur and the Siddhi Vinayakar Temple in Madras. She was also awarded four programmes at Karaikudi, Neyvelli, Pollachi and Karur by the Tamil Nadu Iyel Isai Nataka Mandaram.

Nalini PrakashThe Government of India Scholarship for Bharatanatyam was awarded to Nalini in '82, and in '86 she received the Kalamandir scholarship. In '85, Nalini graduated in Indian Music, Philosophy and Culture from Queen Mary's College, Madras. During her tenure in college, she was adjudged the best dancer for 3 consecutive years. While at college, she took part in a dance drama choreographed by Dr. Padma Subramaniam for the post Centenery celebrations of Madras University, in which she played one of the main roles. She completed her Masters in Performing Arts with distinction in '87 from the M.S.University at Baroda.

The award of Bharatha Kala Bhushana was given to Nalini by her institution Shree Bharatalaya at their Silver Jubilee celebrations. She has also been honoured by the Kalaimaga Sabha as well as Bharath Kalachar from whom she received the Yuva Kala Bharathi award.

Nalini has also trained in music under Padma Shree Madurai N.Krishnan and Prof. S.Ramanathan. At present, Nalini lives at Conoor where she runs a dance school - Silambam - which is a branch of Shree Bharathalaya. Since its inception, Nalini has been giving lecture demonstrations in the Nilgiris to create awareness among the younger generation and to knidle an interest in Bharatanatyam.
