 A. LakshmanLakshman was born in Malaysia where he had his early training from Smt, Veera Venugopal of Bharatha Kalanjali, Malaysia. After moving to Madras, he came under the direct tutelage of the well renowned and highly acclaimed guru Kalaimamani K.J.Sarasa. He has also trained in Carnatic music under Smt. Sarojini Sundaresan, a disciple of Alathoor Shri. Venkatesa Iyer.
One of her star pupils, Lakshman was soon teaching at Sarasalaya, his gurus' school for Bharatanatayam. That he continues to teach at Sarasalaya, bears testimony to his skill and calibre.
As a performer too, Laksman has earned himself a formidable reputation. He has a striking stage presence and his intense devotion to the art is immediately discernable. Apart from solo performances, Lakshman has taken part in several dance dramas in a variety of roles. Some of these include :
- Sarasalaya's "Kundrakudi Kuravanji" at the Natyotsava Festival, and "Shakuntalam" performed at Narada Gana Sabha.
- Played the key role of Lord Krishna in International Dance Alliance's "Krishnam Vande Jagat Gurum" choregraphed by Padmashri Dr. Sudharani Raghupathy with music set by Vidwan Madurai N.Krishnan - performed at 16 centers in the US and Canada.
- Played the roles of Kamsa, Duryodhana and the wrestler in "Panchajanyam" - echo of emotions from Nalayiram Divya Prabhandam organised and choreographed by Anita Ratnam.
Some of his other noteworthy performances have been :
- The purandara Dasa and Vijaynagar Dasara Festival at Hampi, Karnataka
- The Dance Festival of Natarajotsava in Mysore
- The Mamallapuram Dance Festival
Lakshman is a dedicated dancer with over 18 years of experience, during which period he has received many awards. To mention a few
- Bharatha Kala Ratna - awarded by Shree Bharathalaya on the occasion of their silver jublee celebrations
- Yuva Kala Bharathi from Bharath Kalachar
Acclaimed as the best male dancer by many natyacharyas in the field, and by the media, for the skill displayed by him in performance after performance, Lakshman continues to be totally involved in the art - both as a teacher and a performer.
